%20arrested%20by%20an%20outfit,%20a%20magazine,%20a%20dish,%20a%20piece%20of%20cake%20or%20some%20other%20thing%20that%20you%20simply%20must%20own.%20This%20happened%20with%20me%20several%20weeks%20ago%20when,%20browsing%20in%20a%20bookstore,%20I%20found%20Barbara%20Lynch's%20Stir:Mixing%20It%20Up%20in%20the%20Italian%20Tradition.%20%20It's%20a%20very%20pretty%20book%20-%20not%20fluffy%20or%20silly%20in%20any%20way,%20but%20also%20not%20willfully%20plain.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBarbara%20Lynch's%20story%20is%20compelling%20-%20rags%20to%20riches,%20Southie%20to%20Beacon%20Hill.%20It's%20like%20a%20foodie%20fairy%20tale.%20And%20let%20me%20tell%20you,%20the%20recipes%20are%20simply%20divine.%20For%20my%20first%20outing%20with%20this%20book,%20I%20decided%20to%20try%20two%20things%20I'd%20never%20done%20before:%20homemade%20ricotta%20and%20homemade%20gnocchi.%20In%20her%20book,%20Barbara%20tells%20us%20that%20the%20first%20time%20you%20have%20hand-made%20gnocchi%20is%20a%20transformative%20experience%20and%20wow.%20She's%20right.%20The%20gnocchi%20I%20made%20with%20her%20help%20was%20tender,%20yet%20toothsome,%20with%20a%20very%20delicate%20potato%20flavor%20and%20divine%20texture.%20The%20dough%20was%20very%20tender%20and%20a%20little%20sticky.%20Perhaps%20it%20needed%20a%20little%20more%20flour?%20But%20I%20think%20my%20restraint%20with%20the%20flour,%20while%20it%20made%20forming%20the%20happy%20little%20nuggets%20difficult,%20probably%20resulted%20in%20the%20staggering%20tenderness%20of%20the%20finished%20product.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20topped%20the%20gnocchi%20with%20some%20simple%20tomato%20sauce%20and%20dollops%20of%20homemade%20ricotta.%20Before%20I%20go%20on%20to%20the%20tomato%20sauce%20recipe%20(very%20simple,%20so%20if%20you%20have%20even%20the%20vaguest%20idea%20how%20to%20make%20tomato%20sauce,%20don't%20bother%20reading%20on),%20a%20note%20on%20making%20ricotta:%20as%20with%20hand-made%20gnocchi,%20homemade%20ricotta%20is%20transformative.%20The%20flavor%20is%20intense,%20the%20texture%20is%20smooth,%20and%20it%20cooks%20up%20beautifully.%20If%20you%20haven't%20ever%20tried%20this,%20DO%20IT.%20It's%20the%20easiest%20thing%20in%20the%20world%20and%20the%20results%20are%20stunning.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20tomato%20sauce%20doesn't%20really%20follow%20a%20recipe%20as%20such,%20so%20take%20the%20following%20lightly%20and%20feel%20free%20to%20riff%20as%20you%20please.%20Also,%20the%20recipes%20for%20gnocchi%20and%20ricotta%20are%20in%20StirStir:%20Mixing%20It%20Up%20in%20the%20Italian%20Tradition,%20so%20have%20a%20look%20there!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20the%20olive%20oil%20over%20medium%20heat%20until%20shimmering.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20garlic%20and%20cook%20until%20you%20can%20just%20smell%20it%20strongly,%20before%20it%20starts%20to%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EImmediately%20add%20crushed%20tomatoes%20and%20cook%20until%20creamy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20cayenne,%20salt,%20and%20pepper%20to%20taste.%20Be%20sure%20you%20taste%20it%20before%20seasoning,%20as%20canned%20tomatoes%20have%20unpredictable%20saltiness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20assemble%20this%20thing,%20I%20placed%20the%20gnocchi%20in%20baking%20dishes,%20topped%20with%20tomato%20sauce,%20and%20dollopped%20(yes,%20that%20is%20a%20verb)%20some%20ricotta%20on%20top.%20Then%20I%20grated%20pecorino%20romano%20on%20top%20and%20popped%20the%20whole%20thing%20in%20the%20oven%20for%20about%2015%20minutes%20at%20400.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20also%20possible%20that%20I%20am%20so%20very%20happy%20with%20this%20recipe%20because%20we%20ate%20it%20on%20the%20roof!%20It%20was%20the%20first%20rooftop%20meal%20of%20the%20year%20-%20first%20of%20very,%20very%20many%20this%20summer.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
