%20home,%20to%20an%20earlier%20time.%20Most%20of%20the%20recipes%20that%20have%20excited%20me%20lately%20are%20ones%20from%20my%20childhood,%20things%20my%20mom%20cooked%20when%20we%20were%20little%20and%20the%20weather%20was%20turning%20cold.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20funny%20thing%20is%20realizing%20that%20nostalgic%20home-time%20is%20beginning%20to%20extend%20to%20include%20college,%20a%20time%20that%20I%20did%20not%20spend%20at%20home,%20a%20time%20when%20I%20wasn't%20yet%20cooking%20and%20when%20I%20wasn't%20regularly%20eating%20my%20mom's%20food%20anymore.%20It%20was%20a%20magical,%20now%20very%20far-away%20time,%20though,%20with%20hours%20spent%20idly%20sitting%20around,%20never%20short%20on%20fodder%20for%20conversation%20or%20making%20mudslides%20in%20a%20cheap%20blender%20bought%20at%20Wal-Mart%20and%20installed%20in%20our%20semi-functional%20and%20always%20filthy%20house%20kitchenette.%20Oreos,%20peppermint%20ice%20cream,%20and%20some%20milk%20carried%20back%20from%20the%20dining%20hall%20in%20a%20coffee%20mug.%20Or%20coming%20up%20with%20ways%20to%20make%20the%20sadly%20deteriorating%20pool%20table%20more%20functional.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20was%20it%20that%20we%20could%20just%20be%20in%20each%20others'%20company%20so%20easily?%20It%20seems%20like%20lately%20we've%20turned%20to%20watching%20TV%20or%20playing%20games%20or%20doing%20things%20to%20distract%20from%20the%20way%20things%20have%20changed.%20Are%20we%20becoming%20less%20interesting?%20Less%20close?%20Less%20talented%20at%20friendship?%20Is%20it%20just%20a%20part%20of%20growing%20up%20and%20shifting%20our%20attentions%20elsewhere%20(marriage,%20homes,%20money,%20children?)%20or%20is%20it%20some%20natural%20talent%20that%20we%20just%20grow%20out%20of?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOr%20maybe%20I'm%20just%20being%20pessimistic%20and%20short-sighted.%20Maybe%20the%20only%20difference%20is%20that%20we%20just%20have%20less%20time%20and%20it's%20less%20convenient,%20since%20we%20don't%20all%20live%20under%20one%20roof%20together.%20Maybe%20it's%20just%20that%20I%20spend%20all%20of%20my%20time%20at%20home%20just%20hanging%20out%20with%20my%20husband.%20Maybe%20we%20just%20need%20to%20clear%20our%20schedules%20every%20once%20in%20a%20while%20and%20just%20make%20time%20to%20be%20in%20the%20same%20place%20as%20the%20people%20we%20love,%20doing%20nothing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20precisely%20what%20I%20did%20with%20my%20dear%20K%20on%20Sunday.%20We%20had%20brunch%20(oh,%20so%20grown-up),%20and%20then%20we%20hung%20out%20at%20my%20house,%20looking%20at%20Vogue,%20flipping%20through%20cookbooks,%20chatting%20about%20nothing%20in%20particular.%20Then%20we%20went%20to%20the%20supermarket%20and%20reminisced%20about%20making%20mudslides%20while%20buying%20the%20ingredients%20to%20make%20one%20of%20my%20most%20nostalgic%20treats.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20memories%20of%20these%20cupcakes%20(many%20childhood%20birthdays,%20random%20winter%20days,%20special%20occasions%20that%20warranted%20cupcakes)%20are%20densely%20layered%20on%20top%20of%20one%20another%20and%20now%20I'm%20happy%20to%20think%20that%20I've%20added%20another%20Black-Bottom-Cup%20memory%20to%20the%20pile.%20Now%20these%20are%20the%20cupcakes%20that%20I%20grew%20up%20on,%20but%20also%20the%20cupcakes%20I%20grew%20back%20down%20with.%20They%20were%20there%20as%20I%20was%20lunging%20toward%20adulthood,%20but%20they%20also%20accompanied%20me%20and%20my%20friend%20on%20a%20little%20trip%20back%20in%20time%20to%20the%20days%20when%20we%20lived%20together,%20boys%20took%20up%20less%20of%20our%20time,%20and%20just%20killing%20time%20was%20the%20sweetest%20thing%20we%20could%20do.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20little%20baking%20afternoon%20helped%20me%20reconnect%20with%20one%20of%20my%20dear%20friends%20and%20also%20with%20an%20earlier%20version%20of%20myself,%20but%20I'm%20dedicating%20this%20post%20and%20the%20recipe%20(thanks%20as%20ever,%20mom!)%20to%20all%20the%20friends%20I%20used%20to%20sit%20around%20with,%20go%20on%20long%20Mill%20River%20walks%20with,%20nap%20with,%20do%20homework%20with,%20and%20grow%20up%20with.%20I%20miss%20you%20all%20desperately%20and%20hope%20that%20one%20day%20we%20can%20kill%20time%20and%20shoot%20the%20breeze%20together%20soon.%20Meanwhile,%20bake%20these%20and%20think%20of%20me.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlack%20Bottom%20Cups%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFilling:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESift%20dry%20ingredients%20together.%20Add%20remaining%20ingredients%20except%20(optional)%20nuts%20and%20mix%20well.%20Fill%20paper%20muffin%20cups%201/3%20full%20with%20chocolate%20batter.%20Top%20each%20with%20a%20heaping%20teaspoonful%20of%20cream%20cheese%20mixture.%20Sprinkle%20with%20nuts.%20Bake%20at%20350%20for%2025-30%20minutes.%20Makes%202%20dozen.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
