%20Over%20(to%20me!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe're%20getting%20ready%20for%20Passover%20here%20at%20our%20place,%20holding%20our%20first%20seder%20in%20our%20own%20house.%20I'm%20putting%20together%20a%20secular%20haggadah%20since%20our%20guests%20are%20a%20mixed%20bag%20of%20Jews%20and%20friends-of-Jews%20(and%20we%20are,%20ourselves,%20an%20interfaith%20couple).%20I%20still%20need%20to%20scrub%20the%20house%20clean%20and%20clear%20all%20the%20chametz%20out%20of%20the%20kitchen%20-%20that's%20everything%20made%20with%20wheat,%20barley,%20rye,%20oats,%20or%20spelt.%20I%20also%20need%20to%20finish%20the%20grocery%20shopping,%20though%20I%20did%20quite%20a%20bit%20of%20it%20at%20the%20farmers'%20market%20today.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETonight%20I%20may%20go%20ahead%20and%20make%20the%20spiced%20hazelnuts,%20to%20be%20served%20in%20a%20bowl%20on%20the%20table%20for%20snacking%20during%20the%20haggadah%20reading.%20(We%20have%20a%20couple%20of%20young%20children%20attending%20and%20I%20know%20how%20people%20need%20to%20nibble,%20plus%20we'll%20all%20want%20something%20to%20get%20the%20taste%20out%20after%20the%20Bitter%20Herbs.)%20I%20planned%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20menu%20this%20morning...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGarlicky%20Leek%20&%20Artichoke%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChicken%20Cutlets%20with%20Preserved%20Meyer%20Lemon%20&%20Parsley%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGreens%20&%20Quinoa%20Pie%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHoney-Braised%20Carrots%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECabbage%20with%20Cucumber%20&%20Caraway%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMatzah%20&%20Charoset%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(My%20friend%20is%20bringing%20dessert.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20for%20the%20charoset...%20well,%20let's%20face%20it,%20that's%20what%20makes%20it%20Passover!%20For%20those%20who've%20never%20had%20it,%20charoset%20is%20a%20coarse%20paste%20meant%20to%20resemble%20the%20building%20mortar%20that%20the%20Israelites%20used%20as%20slaves.%20It%20is,%20however,%20far%20more%20delicious.%20It%20goes%20on%20the%20seder%20plate%20during%20the%20reading,%20and%20a%20polite%20nibble%20is%20consumed%20as%20we%20go%20through%20the%20ritual,%20but%20everyone%20always%20goes%20back%20for%20a%20helping%20of%20it%20later%20after%20dinner.%20It%20also%20makes%20a%20FABULOUS%20breakfast%20the%20next%20morning,%20and%20makes%20it%20much%20easier%20to%20eat%20tasteless%20matzah%20all%20week.%20So%20we%20tend%20to%20make%20lots%20of%20it.%20Here's%20my%20recipe:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECHAROSET%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20You%20can%20use%20raisins%20instead%20of%20dried%20cherries%20if%20you%20want.%20Keith%20and%20I%20hate%20raisins%20and%20are%20blessed%20to%20live%20in%20Oregon%20where%20dried%20cherries%20are%20reasonably%20cheap.%20I%20haven't%20tried%20this%20with%20dried%20cranberries%20but%20I%20bet%20it%20would%20be%20good%20if%20you%20wanted%20to%20try%20it%20-%20let%20me%20know%20if%20you%20do!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThrow%20the%20apples,%20hazelnuts,%20and%20cherries%20into%20the%20food%20processor%20and%20pulse%20until%20finely%20chopped.%20(Or,%20if%20you%20don't%20have%20a%20food%20processor,%20chop%20it%20all%20very%20finely.)%20You%20want%20it%20chopped,%20mind%20you,%20not%20pureed,%20so%20pulse%20gently%20and%20don't%20overdo%20it.%20Transfer%20the%20chopped%20goods%20to%20a%20bowl%20and%20stir%20in%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20ingredients,%20mixing%20well%20until%20blended.%20Refrigerate%20until%20time%20to%20prepare%20the%20seder%20plate.%20Try%20not%20to%20eat%20it%20all%20before%20then.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEveryone%20who's%20celebrating%20Passover%20this%20year,%20have%20a%20happy%20and%20kosher%20one!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
