Product Review
So in pursuit of gluten free baking (while I wait for my assortment of weird flours to get here from Amazon), I picked up a box of Gluten Free Bisquick from Walmart (I also saw it in Kroger). This thing was about a third of the size of a regular box of Bisquick and twice the price. But hey, it was worth a try to see if we can ease the transition.
The first thing we tried was the pancakes. This is a pretty straight forward recipe involving eggs, oil, milk, and the mix itself. Much like regular Bisquick. ,%20I%20picked%20up%20a%20box%20of%20Gluten%20Free%20Bisquick%20from%20Walmart%20(I%20also%20saw%20it%20in%20Kroger).%20%20This%20thing%20was%20about%20a%20third%20of%20the%20size%20of%20a%20regular%20box%20of%20Bisquick%20and%20twice%20the%20price.%20%20But%20hey,%20it%20was%20worth%20a%20try%20to%20see%20if%20we%20can%20ease%20the%20transition.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20first%20thing%20we%20tried%20was%20the%20pancakes.%20%20This%20is%20a%20pretty%20straight%20forward%20recipe%20involving%20eggs,%20oil,%20milk,%20and%20the%20mix%20itself.%20%20Much%20like%20regular%20Bisquick.%20%20Naturally%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20NOT%20fiddle,%20so%20I%20replaced%20the%20oil%20with%20applesauce%20and%20added%20Greek%20yogurt%20(1/4%20cup),%20then%20cooked%20them%20using%20some%20oil%20on%20my%20griddle.%20%20I%20am%20thrilled%20to%20report%20that%20these%20tasted%20like%20real%20pancakes.%20%20The%20recipe%20said%20it%20would%20make%208%204%E2%80%B3%20pancakes.%20%20I%20got%2010.%20%20We%20had%20real%20maple%20syrup%20and%20applewood%20smoked%20bacon%20with%20them%20for%20a%20DELICIOUS%20Sunday%20morning%20breakfast.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20next%20thing%20we%20tried%20with%20this%20mix%20was%20the%20recipe%20for%20pizza%20crust.%20%20Now%20I%20am%20a%20pizza%20crust%20snob.%20%20I%20make%20mine%20from%20scratch%20and%20it%E2%80%99s%20damned%20good,%20so%20I%20have,%20shall%20we%20say,%20discerning%20taste%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20pizza%20crust.%20%20But,%20as%20I%20said%20earlier,%20I%E2%80%99m%20still%20waiting%20on%20my%20assortment%20of%20alternative%20flours%20to%20get%20in%20so%20that%20I%20can%20try%20the%20gluten%20free%20pizza%20crust%20recipe%20in%20Healthy%20Bread%20in%205%20Minutes%20A%20Day,%20and%20we%20wanted%20pizza%20tonight,%20so%20Bisquick%20it%20was.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20I%20mixed%20things%20up%20as%20directed%20(using%20oil,%20eggs,%20water,%20and%20the%20mix),%20the%20dough%20itself%20was%20a%20really%20STRANGE%20texture%20IMO.%20%20Very%20gloppy,%20not%20at%20all%20stiff%20in%20any%20way.%20%20You%20could%20never%20use%20this%20on%20a%20pizza%20stone,%20so%20I%20hauled%20out%20a%20shallow%20pyrex%20casserole%20dish%20and%20pressed%20it%20along%20the%20greased%20bottom%20of%20that.%20%20You%20do%20a%20prebake%20of%20this%20crust%20for%2015%20minutes,%20then%20add%20all%20your%20toppings,%20and%20bake%20another%2015.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20verdict:%20Um%E2%80%A6no.%20%20The%20crust%20itself%20was%20very%20crumbly.%20%20You%20could%20never%20pick%20this%20up%20as%20a%20slice.%20%20It%20absorbed%20all%20the%20sauce%20so%20that%20even%20I%E2%80%93who%20am%20not%20a%20big%20sauce%20fan%20to%20begin%20with%E2%80%93found%20it%20too%20dry.%20%20It%20was,%20all%20in%20all,%20like%20eating%20pizza%20on%20very%20thin%20cornbread.%20%20I%20had%20a%20quarter%20of%20the%20pizza.%20%20Hubby%20had%20a%20quarter%20and%20another%20half%20quarter.%20%20The%20dogs%20ate%20the%20rest.%20%20What%20we%20did%20eat%20is%20now%20sitting%20in%20our%20stomach%20like%20lead.%20%20I%20do%20NOT%20recommend%20this%20for%20pizza%20crust.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20overall%20impressions%20of%20the%20product%E2%80%A6I%20think%20it%E2%80%99s%20probably%20perfectly%20fine%20for%20breakfast%20items%E2%80%93which%20is%20what%20Bisquick%20is%20best%20at,%20after%20all.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETAGS:Product%20Review%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
