%20and%20my%20mother%20saw%20it%20sitting%20on%20an%20end%20table%20one%20day.%20She%20commented%20on%20how%20she%20had%20wanted%20to%20review%20it%20when%20it%20came%20out,%20and%20never%20got%20a%20chance%20to%20do%20so.%20So%20I%20told%20her%20to%20take%20it%20home%20for%20a%20few%20days.%20Next%20thing%20you%20know%20she%20was%20calling%20saying%20we%20had%20to%20try%20this%20and%20that%20from%20the%20book.%20We%20decided%20to%20get%20together%20at%20her%20house%20(her%20kitchen%20is%20twice%20the%20size%20of%20mine)%20last%20weekend%20and%20try%20the%20cabbage%20rolls%20from%20Garth's%20mom.%20We're%20mixing%20and%20cooking%20and%20having%20a%20great%20day.%20I'm%20taking%20pictures%20and%20dont%20you%20know,%20my%20battery%20dies.%20I%20never%20thought%20to%20grab%20the%20charger.%20The%20last%20picture%20I%20managed%20to%20get%20was%20the%20meat%20on%20the%20cabbage%20leaf%20about%20to%20be%20rolled.%20I%20took%20the%20final%20picture%20when%20I%20came%20home%20and%20had%20dinner%20that%20night,%20after%20letting%20the%20battery%20on%20our%20camera%20charge.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20here%20we%20go.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20ingredient%20list%20is%20fairly%20long,%20lots%20of%20spices.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EReady%20for%20stuffing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWrap%20and%20roll.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EColleen's%20Cabbage%20Rolls%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdapted%20from%20Home%20Cooking%20with%20Trisha%20Yearwood%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20350%20degrees.%20In%20a%20large%20bowl,%20mix%20the%20beef,%20rice,%20salt,%20pepper,%20cinnamon,%20cloves,%20amd%20tomatoes.%20Set%20aside.Wash%20and%20core%20the%20cabbage.%20Bring%20a%20large%20stockpot%20filled%20with%208%20cups%20of%20the%20water,%20the%20sugar,%20lemon%20juice,%20vinegar,%20and%20bay%20leaves%20to%20a%20boil.%20Blanch%20the%20cabbage%20in%20the%20boiling%20mixture%20for%205%20minutes,%20or%20until%20just%20softened.%20Drain%20the%20cabbage,%20let%20it%20cool,%20then%20carefully%20peel%2012%20leaves%20from%20the%20cabbage.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%201/4%20cup%20of%20the%20beef%20and%20rice%20mixture%20onto%20each%20leaf.%20Fold%20in%20the%20sides%20of%20the%20leaf%20and%20wrap%20into%20a%20roll.%20Place%20the%20cabbage%20rolls,%20seam%20side%20down,%20closely%20together%20in%20a%209%20x%2013%20x%202%20inch%20shallow%20baking%20pan.In%20a%20small%20bowl,%20combine%20the%20tomato%20juice%20with%20the%20remaining%201%20cup%20water%20and%20pour%20the%20mixture%20over%20the%20cabbage%20rolls.%20Cover%20the%20pan%20with%20aluminum%20foil%20and%20bake%20for%2045%20to%2050%20minutes,%20or%20until%20the%20meat%20is%20well%20done.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%206%20servings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20to%20tell%20you%20we%20doubled%20the%20recipe%20and%20still%20only%20had%2014%20cabbage%20rolls.%20We%20were%20really%20unimpressed%20with%20this%20recipe.%20For%20one%20the%20cinnamon%20and%20cloves%20were%20quite%20overpowering.%20Not%20our%20cup%20of%20tea%20so%20to%20say.%20Mom%20said%20she'll%20stick%20with%20her%20recipe%20the%20way%20she's%20always%20made%20them,%20and%20I%20agree.%20Secondly%20the%20sauce%20was%20very%20watery.%20We%20even%20added%20another%206%20ounces%20of%20the%20tomato%20juice%20and%20still%20watery.%20When%20I%20came%20home%20I%20added%20some%20tomato%20sauce%20and%20some%20onion%20and%20garlic%20powder%20to%20mine%20and%20put%20the%20dish%20back%20into%20the%20oven%20for%20a%20little%20while.%20It%20was%20thicker%20and%20better.%20We%20still%20weren't%20happy%20with%20the%20flavors%20of%20the%20spices.%20Even%20Michael%20said%20they%20weren't%20what%20he%20was%20used%20to.%20His%20grandmother%20frequently%20made%20%22pigs%20in%20a%20blanket%22%20as%20she%20called%20them.%20Well,%20to%20each%20his%20own%20I%20guess.%20You%20can%20try%20them%20and%20decide%20for%20yourself.%20I%20know%20I'll%20make%20them%20from%20my%20own%20recipe%20or%20maybe%20even%20do%20some%20internet%20surfing%20and%20see%20what%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20world%20has%20to%20offer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe're%20off%20to%20the%20other%20house%20to%20paint%20and%20clean%20for%20the%20day.%20Stay%20safe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECarla%20and%20Michael%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
