,%20so%20I%20submitted%20a%20story,%20which%20I%20also%20want%20to%20share%20with%20you,%20about%20the%20agony,%20the%20ecstasy%20and%20the%20oh-the-humanity%20of%20chocolate%20chip%20cookie%20obsession!Chocolate%20Chip%20Cookies...%20I%20can't%20quit%20you%20-%20Photo%20by%20Wasabi%20PrimeI%20had%20the%20totally%20sweet%20opportunity%20to%20preview%20Jessie%20Olesson%20Moore's%20new%20book,%20The%20Secret%20Lives%20of%20Baked%20Goods,%20a%20fun%20compilation%20of%20classic%20recipes%20like%20Baked%20Alaska,%20Cherries%20Jubilee%20and%20whoopie%20pies,%20as%20well%20as%20wacky%20ones%20I'd%20never%20heard%20of,%20like%20Joe%20Froggers,%20which%20sound%20a%20bit%20like%20gingersnaps.%20The%20recipes%20come%20with%20histories,%20which%20I%20found%20particularly%20interesting%20in%20regards%20to%20my%20obsession%20with%20chocolate%20chip%20cookies.%20Apparently%201937%20was%20the%20grand%20year%20that%20the%20cookie%20was%20invented,%20but%20quite%20by%20accident,%20as%20it%20was%20originally%20designed%20to%20be%20an%20all-chocolate%20cookie%20when%20a%20woman%20named%20Ruth%20Wakefield%20was%20preparing%20classic%20butter%20cookies%20and%20mixed%20in%20some%20chunks%20of%20chocolate,%20assuming%20they%20would%20just%20melt%20during%20the%20baking%20process.%20The%20chocolate%20was%20softened,%20but%20kept%20its%20form%20in%20the%20baked%20dough,%20nicely%20incorporated%20into%20the%20cookie%20with%20a%20lovely,%20sweet%20texture.%20Ruth%20Wakefield%20worked%20at%20an%20inn,%20which%20just%20so%20happened%20to%20be%20called%20the%20Toll%20House%20Inn%20of%20Massachusetts.%20The%20rest,%20as%20they%20say,%20is%20history.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20baked%20goods%20tale%20is%20nowhere%20near%20as%20groundbreaking,%20more%20of%20a%20love%20note%20to%20a%20classic%20cookie,%20as%20well%20as%20a%20cautionary%20tale%20to%20make%20sure%20you%20label%20your%20pantry%20goods%20accordingly.%20Here%20it%20is:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%E2%80%99s%20nothing%20quite%20like%20the%20smell%20of%20buttery,%20brown%20sugar%20cookie%20dough%20bubbling%20and%20crisping%20in%20the%20oven,%20especially%20in%20the%20wee%20hours%20of%20the%20night.%20The%20smell%20permeated%20the%20house,%20and%20even%20though%20I%E2%80%99d%20clean%20up%20everything%20when%20I%20was%20done,%20my%20mom%20would%20wake%20up%20the%20next%20morning%20to%20the%20smell%20of%20fresh%20baked%20cookies,%20fully%20aware%20that%20her%20cookie-gremlin%20daughter%20had%20been%20at%20it%20again.%20I%20kept%20this%20habit%20going%20from%20grade%20school,%20all%20the%20way%20up%20through%20college,%20when%20I%E2%80%99d%20come%20home%20for%20visits.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20remember%20one%20night%20of%20midnight%20chocolate%20chip%20cookie-baking,%20I%20grabbed%20the%20glass%20jar%20of%20what%20looked%20to%20be%20the%20last%20little%20bit%20of%20flour%20in%20the%20pantry.%20Just%20enough%20to%20make%20a%20batch%20of%20cookies.%20I%20mixed%20up%20the%20batter,%20spooned%20it%20onto%20the%20baking%20sheet%20and%20put%20it%20into%20the%20oven.%20I%20noticed%20the%20batter%20was%20a%20little%20thin,%20but%20I%20shrugged%20it%20off%20until%20I%20noticed%20the%20cookies%20in%20the%20oven%20were%20refusing%20to%20rise%20and%20get%20crisp.%20They%20were%20runny,%20flat%20and%20caramelizing%20onto%20the%20baking%20sheet.%20Every%20batch%20was%20doing%20this%20and%20I%20was%20frustratingly%20throwing%20them%20out.%20I%20thought%20the%20dough%20would%20firm%20up%20overnight,%20so%20I%20cut%20the%20baking%20session%20short%20and%20put%20the%20batter%20into%20the%20fridge.%20I%20woke%20up%20the%20next%20morning%20to%20my%20mom%20asking%20why%20I%20baked%20cookies%20using%20all%20her%20powdered%20sugar.%20DOH.%20Apparently%20at%20some%20point,%20she%20had%20put%20the%20powdered%20sugar%20in%20the%20jar%20she%20usually%20puts%20the%20flour%20in.%20The%20powdered%20sugar%20cookie%20dough%20was%20thrown%20out%20and%20that%20was%20the%20one%20time%20my%20midnight%20baking%20was%20thwarted%20by%20an%20unexpected%20ingredient%20swap.%20Lesson%20learned%20%E2%80%93%20label%20everything.%20But%20my%20love%20for%20fresh-baked%20chocolate%20chip%20cookies%20remains%20unwavering.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFeed%20your%20sweet%20tooth%20and%20a%20curiosity%20over%20the%20history%20of%20favorite%20treats%20-%20Photos%20by%20Wasabi%20Prime%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
