Acerca de mí
I'm known as the former operator of Monterey Foods in Berkeley, and I grew this business alongside the food revolution in Northern California. I'm strongly committed to supporting local agriculture, artisan producers, and sustainable farming practices. As a result of my work, I was the focus of a 2007 feature-length documentary, Eat At Bill’s: Life in the Monterey Market by filmmaker Lisa Brenneis.
Influencias de Cocina
I am not a chef but a greengrocer. From very early on, I learned what produce tastes like raw. Once, in teaching me about eggplants, my Dad offered me a slice of the kind of eggplant he did not want me to buy. I always remember how bitter it tasted raw. Then my Dad had me taste a better eggplant. So, wherever I have traveled in the world, I have learned to appreciate dishes that accentuate the characteristic flavors of a particular fruit or vegetable. Whether stir fry, sorbet, pasta, or tart, I always appreciate dishes that celebrate that local seasonal product.
