%20%20%20But,%20when%20I%20re-watched%20the%20film%20for%20this%20post,%20I%20again%20was%20aggravated%20by%20the%20cast%20of%20characters.%20%20(See%20my%20last%20Food%20%E2%80%98n%20Flix%20post%20for%20a%20major%20character%20aggravation!)%20%20%20Don%E2%80%99t%20get%20me%20wrong,%20all%20of%20the%20actors%20did%20a%20fabulous%20job%20bringing%20Mississippi%20culture%20to%20life%20and%20I%20believe%20the%20screen%20play%20was%20pretty%20much%20true%20to%20the%20novel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPerhaps%20it%20was%20not%20so%20much%20the%20characters%20like%20Hilly%20and%20her%20narrow-minded%20and%20bigoted%20ways,%20but%20the%20entire%20beliefs%20and%20environment%20of%20%20the%20Deep%20South%20prior%20to%20the%20Civil%20Rights%20movement%20that%20aggravated%20me%20so%20much.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAn%20ideal%20time%20in%20American%20history?%20Definitely%20NOT!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%E2%80%99s%20not%20forget%20the%20message%20of%20the%20film.%20%20In%20that%20regard,%20this%20is%20an%20important%20film%20and%20I%E2%80%99m%20glad%20it%20is%20there%20to%20remind%20us%20about%20our%20not%20too%20distant%20past%20history.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20off%20my%20soap%20box%20so%20let%E2%80%99s%20get%20on%20to%20the%20food.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThree%20different%20varieties:%20Clemson%20Spineless,%20Jade,%20and%20Red%20Burgundy%20Okra.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhat%20could%20be%20more%20Southern%20than%20okra?%20%20%20Since%20I%20was%20able%20to%20grow%20at%20least%20a%20bit%20of%20it%20this%20summer,%20I%20wanted%20to%20post%20a%20super%20spicy%20recipe%20for%20fried%20okra%20(and%20an%20easy%20way%20to%20preserve%20it%20for%20winter%20meals).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStart%20a%20pot%20of%20water%20to%20boiling.%20%20Wash%20okra%20and%20cut%20off%20stem.%20%20%20%20%20Prepare%20an%20ice%20water%20bath.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlanch%20okra%20in%20small%20batches%203-4%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlanch%20the%20okra%20pods.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20and%20place%20in%20ice%20water%20bath%20immediately.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECool%20quickly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20cool,%20slice%20into%201/2%20inch%20slices.%20%20%20%20Place%20slices%20on%20a%20paper%20towel%20lined%20baking%20sheet%20to%20drain%20a%20bit.%20%20(Your%20okra%20will%20never%20be%20dry%20because%20it%20is%20slimy%20okra%20after%20all.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20okra%20is%20draining,%20mix%20together%20dry%20ingredients%20in%20a%20small%20bowl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhisk%20the%20spices%20together.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20canola%20oil%20in%20a%20cast%20iron%20skillet.%20%20%20Dredge%20okra%20pieces%20in%20the%20spicy%20flour%20mixture.%20%20%20%20When%20oil%20is%20hot,%20fry.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFry%20it%20up!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20to%20a%20paper%20towel%20lined%20plate%20to%20drain.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEat%20as%20soon%20as%20it%20is%20cool%20enough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20served%20this%20with%20Copy-Cat%20Chik-Fil-A%20Chicken%20from%20Jen%20at%20Juanita%E2%80%99s%20Cocina.%20%20%20You%20must%20try%20this%20recipe.%20%20%20It%20is%20deliciously%20different.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20may%20not%20be%20Southern-fried%20chicken,%20but%20it%20is%20delicious.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnother%20great%20idea%20is%20to%20freeze%20this%20okra%20after%20the%20dredging%20step%20above.%20%20%20Place%20the%20dredged%20okra%20in%20a%20single%20layer%20on%20a%20baking%20sheet%20and%20freeze.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAt%20this%20point%20you%20can%20freeze%20the%20okra.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20the%20slices%20are%20frozen,%20remove%20and%20seal%20in%20freezer%20bags.%20%20%20It%20is%20best%20to%20use%20a%20seal-a-meal%20if%20you%20have%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeasure%20out%20whatever%20sized%20servings%20you%20will%20need%20for%20winter%20meals.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20to%20recap,%20this%20film%20offers%20us%20all%20a%20glimpse%20into%20a%20dark%20era%20of%20American%20history%20that%20in%20itself%20makes%20it%20an%20important%20film%20to%20revisit.%20%20%20%20%20We%20can%20learn%20a%20lot,%20even%20in%20these%20%E2%80%9Cenlightened%E2%80%9D%20times%20in%20which%20we%20currently%20live.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20special%20thought%20we%20can%20all%20keep%20to%20heart%20at%20times,%20especially%20if%20we%20work%20with%20children:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9CYou%20is%20kind.%20You%20is%20smart.%20You%20is%20important.%20%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%94Aibileen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20thought%20should%20be%20a%20mantra%20repeated%20often%20to%20some%20children%20and%20adults%20alike%20(but%20with%20correct%20grammar,%20please).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThanks%20to%20Glennis%20at%20Can%E2%80%99t%20Believe%20We%20Ate%20for%20hosting%20this%20month.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20am%20really%20looking%20forward%20to%20September%E2%80%99s%20film,%20It%E2%80%99s%20Complicated%20with%20Meryl%20Streep%20and%20Alec%20Baldwin.%20%20%20%20I%20love%20Streep%20and%20am%20really%20excited%20that%20she%20is%20starring%20in%20August:%20Osage%20County,%20a%20play%20turned%20film%20currently%20shooting%20in%20northeastern%20Oklahoma.%20%20%20%20Don%E2%80%99t%20worry,%20if%20I%20have%20a%20star%20sighting%20it%20will%20be%20posted%20immediately!%20%20%20%20We%20were%20lucky%20enough%20to%20see%20the%20touring%20cast%20of%20this%20play%20in%20Tulsa%20%20a%20couple%20of%20years%20ago.%20%20%20%20Talk%20about%20a%20dysfunctional%20family%20squared%20on%20crack.%20%20%20%20%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20wait%20for%20the%20movie%20and%20I%20hope%20I%20am%20not%20setting%20myself%20up%20for%20disappointment%20again.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
