- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 2 Eggs, at room temperature
- 1 Egg yolk
- 1/4 cup Vegetable oil
- 3 1/4 cup All-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 Egg yolk, whisked with 2 tbsp Milk for brushing
- Sesame seeds, poppy seeds, grated cheese for sprinkling (optional)

,%20I%20happened%20to%20watch%20this%20show%20in%20AFC%20called%20%22Bake%20with%20Anna%20Olson%22%20and%20she%20was%20making%20braided%20egg%20buns%20which%20she%20said%20are%20staples%20in%20bakeries%20everywhere%20(maybe%20in%20the%20US%20and%20other%20western%20countries%20as%20I%20hardly%20find%20these%20buns%20in%20Malaysia%20or%20Indonesia).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyhow,%20I%20was%20inspired%20by%20this%20particular%20recipe%20of%20hers%20and%20suddenly,%20I%20was%20also%20on-fire%20to%20test%20her%20recipe%20right%20after%20her%20show%20in%20AFC%20ended.%20I%20knew%20I%20was%20not%20feeling%20terribly%20well%20that%20afternoon%20but%20when%20my%20fever%20had%20not%20come%20back%20as%20yet,%20I%20used%20that%20opportunity%20to%20make%20the%20bread%20dough%20and%20so%20on.%20In%20the%20end,%20I%20managed%20to%20produce%20a%20dozen%20of%20braided%20egg%20buns%20by%20night%20before%20collapsing%20and%20actually%20got%20admitted%20to%20hospital%20the%20next%20night.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere's%20the%20recipe%20of%20the%20buns%20that%20I%20made%20few%20weeks%20ago,%20adapted%20from%20Anna%20Olson's%20recipe.%20I%20am%20not%20a%20master%20in%20braiding%20hair,%20even%20the%20simplest%20one,%20but%20somehow%20I%20could%20braid%20my%20buns%20and%20they%20looked%20fine%20-%20using%20four%20strands%20braid%20method.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20buns%20look%20so%20sophisticated%20but%20they%20are%20not.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBraided%20Egg%20Buns%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETutorial:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Double%20boil%20or%20heat%20fresh%20milk%20and%20condensed%20milk%20in%20a%20heat-resistant%20bowl%20until%20lukewarm.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20As%20per%20the%20general%20bread%20maker%20function:%20Place%20fresh%20milk,%20condensed%20milk,%20oil,%20eggs,%20sugar%20and%20salt%20first%20in%20the%20bread%20maker.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Pour%20the%20all%20purpose%20flour%20then%20make%20a%20small%20hole%20in%20the%20flour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Put%20the%20yeast%20in%20the%20flour%20hole%20(make%20sure%20the%20yeast%20is%20not%20in%20contact%20with%20the%20liquid%20ingredients%20before%20kneading).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Turn%20your%20bread%20machine%20on%20(I%20use%20the%20basic%20program).%20Knead%20once,%20which%20takes%20about%2010%20mins.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E6.%20Take%20the%20dough%20out%20of%20the%20machine%20and%20place%20the%20dough%20in%20an%20oiled%20bowl.%20Cover%20the%20bowl%20with%20plastic%20wrap%20and%20let%20it%20rise%20for%2090%20minutes%20until%20doubled%20in%20size.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20dough%2090%20minutes%20later%20after%20the%20first%20proofing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E7.%20Turn%20the%20dough%20out%20onto%20a%20lightly%20floured%20work%20surface%20and%20cut%20into%2012%20pieces.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E8.%20To%20create%20the%20braided%20buns%20with%204%20strands:%20Cut%20each%20piece%20of%20the%20dough%20in%20half%20and%20roll%20out%20each%20half%20into%20a%20thin%20rope%20about%2012%20inches%20long.%20Place%20one%20rope%20of%20dough%20over%20the%20second%20and%20create%20a%20cross.%20Bring%20the%20ends%20of%20the%20bottom%20(vertical)%20rope%20over%20the%20top%20rope,%20crossing%20completely.%20Repeat%20this%20step%20with%20the%20horizontal%20piece%20of%20dough%20and%20continue%20crossing%20the%20ropes%20over%20until%20you%20reach%20the%20ends%20of%20the%20dough.%20Tuck%20the%20end%20of%20the%20pieces%20and%20place%20the%20braided%20buns%20in%20lined%20baking%20trays.%20Repeat%20this%20step%20with%20the%20remaining%20buns.%20For%20easier%20and%20clearer%20instructions%20in%20braiding%20the%20buns,%20check%20some%20tutorial%20videos%20in%20Youtube,%20you'd%20learn%20a%20lot%20from%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20braided%20buns,%20ready%20for%20their%20second%20rise.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E9.%20Cover%20the%20trays%20with%20plastic%20wrap%20and%20let%20the%20buns%20rise%20for%20another%2045%20minutes%20or%20until%20almost%20double%20in%20size.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E10.%20Brush%20the%20buns%20with%20egg%20wash%20and%20sprinkle%20the%20buns%20with%20sesame/poppy%20seeds%20(I%20didn't%20have%20any%20so%20my%20buns%20were%20plain).%20I%20did,%20however,%20top%20some%20of%20the%20buns%20with%20grated%20cheese%20as%20per%20my%20husband's%20request.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E11.%20Bake%20the%20buns%20in%20a%20preheated%20oven%20(160-170%20degree%20Celcius)%20for%2020-25%20minutes%20or%20until%20the%20buns%20are%20golden%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDone%20and%20done.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBy%20far,%20I%20think%20this%20was%20my%20first%20time%20handling%20a%20dough%20that's%20not%20difficult%20at%20all%20to%20handle.%20Not%20sticky%20or%20too%20hard,%20the%20elasticity%20was%20just%20perfect%20to%20braid%20or%20form%20to%20other%20shapes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMoving%20on,%20the%20first%20thing%20my%20husband%20said%20when%20he%20ate%20the%20bun%20was%20that%20the%20bun%20tasted%20like%20bread%20(Duh!).%20Then,%20he%20also%20commented%20that%20he%20felt%20so%20healthy%20eating%20fresh%20home%20made%20buns.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThat%20night,%20I%20sent%20my%20buns%20pictures%20to%20my%20brother%20who%20was%20holidaying%20in%20my%20parents'%20house.%20Minutes%20after%20he%20received%20the%20pics,%20he%20sent%20one%20picture%20back%20to%20me.%20I%20don't%20know%20how%20he%20managed%20to%20edit%20the%20picture%20so%20fast%20using%209gag%20style%20and%20he%20successfully%20made%20me%20laugh%20with%20this%20one.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20brother%20is%20a%20funny%20guy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESince%20MIL%20was%20in%20Thailand%20that%20week%20and%20we%20couldn't%20finish%20a%20dozen%20of%20buns%20in%20two%20days%20or%20so%20(home-made%20buns%20don't%20use%20any%20artificial%20preservatives%20so%20they%20don't%20last%20fresh%20that%20long),%20I%20gave%20more%20than%20half%20of%20the%20buns%20to%20Naomi's%20teachers%20and%20friends%20the%20next%20morning.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20always%20have%20this%20happy%20problem%20in%20our%20house%20to%20finish%20all%20the%20stuff%20that%20I%20bake%20because%20we%20are%20a%20small%20family%20of%20three%20and%20Naomi%20generally%20doesn't%20really%20eat%20bread%20or%20cookies%20yet.%20So,%20yeah..%20I%20normally%20give%20away%20half%20or%20more%20than%20half%20my%20home-made%20baked%20goods%20to%20family%20members,%20neighbours%20or%20Naomi's%20school.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
