  1. First dissolve the cocoa with the boiling water, add in red coloring and set aside to cool while you mix the rest of the cake. Then sift and measure the flour, then resift 3 times with the cream of tartar, soda, and salt.Next cream the Crisco and sugar very thoroughly till a creamy mass, then add in 1 whole egg. Beat again thoroughly. Add in the other egg and beat well again. Add in the flour mix with lowfat milk, alternately to first mix, beating smooth after each addition. Blend in the cooled cocoa mix.
  2. Last, add in the 2 tsp vanilla. This will make a very thin batter but which is correct. Pour into 3 large 8 or possibly 9-inch round cake pans that have been greased and lightly floured. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 min.
  3. Beat egg whites and Karo together till they will stand in peaks. Add in the sugar slowly and continue beating till sugar is well blended. Add in the vanilla and blend.
