%20This%20particular%20one%20made%20with%20pearl%20onions%20tastes%20amazing.%20I%20made%20this%20for%20the%20first%20time%20though.%20This%20particular%20recipe%20is%20from%20my%20aunt%20in%20NJ.%20When%20I%20first%20moved%20to%20the%20US%20about%2014%20years%20ago,%20it%20was%20winter%20time%20and%20I%20felt%20really%20lost.%20It%20used%20to%20be%20cold%20and%20dreary,%20I%20did%20not%20have%20a%20license%20yet%20to%20drive,%20there%20were%20no%20people%20to%20be%20seen%20outside%20and%20to%20top%20it%20all,%20the%20spouse%20was%20very%20busy%20at%20work%20and%20would%20work%20late%20hours.%20Aunt%20M%20and%20my%20two%20cousins-in-law%20were%20my%20lifeline.%20I%20hardly%20knew%20any%20cooking%20back%20then%20and%20Aunt%20M%20was%20my%20go-to%20person%20for%20comfort%20food%20and%20recipes.%20Both%20she%20and%20my%20Uncle%20N%20are%20amazing%20cooks.%20They%20are%20privy%20to%20my%20disasters%20too%20(carrot%20huli%20with%20no%20tamarind,%20soggy%20puris%20that%20refused%20to%20puff%20up,%20setting%20off%20the%20smoke%20alarm%20while%20experimenting%20with%20corn%20kebabs,%20the%20tadka%20oil%20that%20caught%20fire%20etc.)%20%20Of%20course,%20I'd%20never%20miss%20an%20opportunity%20to%20feel%20like%20I%20was%20back%20at%20my%20mom's%20house,%20enjoying%20their%20impeccable%20hospitality%20and%20devouring%20Aunt%20M's%20delicious%20masala%20dosas,%20menasina%20anna%20(pepper%20rice,%20recipe%20coming%20up%20soon),%20bendekayi%20gojju%20(okra%20curry),%20uddina%20kadabu%20with%20chutney...sigh,%20I'm%20drooling%20even%20as%20I%20type%20this!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBack%20to%20the%20gojju,%20try%20once%20and%20you%20will%20be%20hooked.%20Pearl%20onions%20are%20a%20pain%20to%20peel.%20I've%20used%20frozen%20peeled%20white%20pearl%20onions%20from%20the%20regular%20grocery%20store%20here.%20The%20ones%20at%20the%20Indian%20store%20had%20quite%20a%20bit%20of%20leftover%20skin,%20so%20check%20before%20using%20those.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3-4%20dried%20red%20chilies%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20using%20frozen%20pearl%20onions,%20microwave%20for%202%20minutes%20just%20to%20thaw%20it%20a%20bit.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDry%20roast%20the%20masala%20ingredients%20in%20the%20order%20above.%20Let%20cool%20completely%20and%20grind%20to%20a%20paste%20with%20some%20water.%20Keep%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20oil%20in%20a%20pan.%20Add%20mustard%20seeds%20and%20let%20them%20pop.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20chopped%20white%20onion%20and%20fry%20for%20a%20few%20seconds.%20Add%20the%20thawed%20or%20fresh%20pearl%20onions%20and%20saute%20for%204-5%20minutes%20n%20medium-low%20heat%20until%20lightly%20golden.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20ground%20masala,%20jaggery,%20tamarind,%20salt%20and%201/2%20a%20cup%20of%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMix%20well.%20Cover%20and%20cook%20on%20medium-low%20for%2010-12%20minutes,%20stirring%20in%20between,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20hot%20with%20rice%20and%20ghee.%20This%20goes%20well%20with%20tawa%20rotis%20too.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
