%20but%20the%20memories%20are%20flashbulb%20moments%20of%20his%20mum%20leaning%20over%20me%20%E2%80%93%20bewildered,%20frustrated%20and%20at%20times,%20downright%20angry.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESteak%20slice,%20ready%20for%20the%20oven.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShe%20had%20a%20thing%20about%20hot%20Ribena%20for%20the%20duration%20of%20this%20holiday%20or%20rather,%20her%20kids%20did.%20Hot%20Ribena%20is%20the%20single%20most%20disgusting%20beverage%20in%20the%20world,%20right%20up%20there%20with%20warm%20snake%E2%80%99s%20blood%20and%20coconut%20water.%20For%20some%20reason,%20I%20felt%20like%20I%20had%20to%20drink%20it%20anyway,%20that%20reason%20most%20likely%20being%20that%20I%20was%20seven%20years%20old%20and%20didn%E2%80%99t%20have%20the%20confidence%20or%20bad%20manners%20to%20tell%20her%20otherwise.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20remember%20standing%20in%20the%20driving%20rain,%20feeling%20the%20sickly%20burn%20combine%20with%20nausea%20in%20the%20pit%20of%20my%20stomach.%20There%20was%20a%20time%20when%20I%20was%20being%20particularly%20difficult%20(perhaps%20bawling%20at%20the%20prospect%20of%20another%20purple%20blackcurrant%20juice%20scalding%20its%20way%20down%20my%20oesophagus)%20and%20The%20Mum%20had%20all%20but%20given%20up.%20Enter%20the%20steak%20slices.%20I%20remember%20clearly%20the%20moment%20when%20she%20popped%20the%20boot%20of%20the%20car,%20pushing%20aside%20the%20wellies,%20cagoules%20and%20carrier%20bags%20to%20reveal%20a%20pile%20of%20Ginsters,%20the%20black%20and%20red%20wrappers%20garish,%20her%20face%20grimacing%20as%20she%20handed%20them%20out.%20This%20was%20a%20woman%20who%20used%20to%20force%20feed%20us%20consomm%C3%A9%20from%20a%20tin%20and%20once%20had%20a%20go%20at%20me%20for%20using%20the%20wrong%20knife%20on%20a%20piece%20of%20cheese.%20She%20had%20aspirations.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20remember%20her%20apologising%20for%20the%20fact%20there%20was%20nowhere%20to%20heat%20up%20the%20slices%20but%20I%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20have%20been%20happier.%20She%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20believe%20me.%20I%20really%20loved%20a%20cold%20steak%20slice,%20see,%20along%20with%20a%20cold%20steak%20and%20kidney%20pie,%20or%20a%20cold%20cheese%20and%20onion%20pasty.%20She%20was%20giving%20me%20a%20huge%20hug%20from%20home%20with%20one%20hand%20while%20trying%20to%20take%20it%20away%20with%20the%20other.%20I%20gleefully%20ate%20it,%20all%20the%20wobbly%20peppered%20steak%20inside%20gummy%20cold%20pastry.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20reminded%20of%20all%20this%20when%20I%20made%20these%20toasties%20because%20the%20filling,%20when%20eaten%20straight%20from%20the%20fridge,%20transported%20me%20instantly%20to%20the%20inside%20of%20a%20rustling%20raincoat,%20tiny%20red%20fingers%20clutching%20a%20packet.%20I%20had%20to%20make%20steak%20slices.%20They%20went%20a%20little%20wrong%20because%20I%20over-filled%20(rookie%20mistake)%20and%20one%20burst%20open%20in%20the%20oven.%20Coincidentally,%20I%20did%20this%20because%20I%20was%20upset%20about%20something%20and%20I%20simply%20cannot%20cook%20when%20my%20mind%20isn%E2%80%99t%20on%20the%20job.%20The%20past%20few%20months%20have%20been%20stressful,%20which%20is%20why%20I%20had%20just%20a%20little%20taste%20of%20a%20freshly%20baked%20slice,%20before%20letting%20it%20cool%20and%20putting%20it%20carefully%20to%20rest%20in%20the%20fridge.%20The%20next%20day,%20it%20emerged%20as%20the%20perfect%20comfort%20food,%20no%20tears%20necessary.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEnjoyed%20this%20trip%20down%20memory%20lane?%20You%20may%20also%20like%20my%20Horse%20Meat%20Crispy%20Pancakes%20in%20the%20style%20of%20Findus.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESteak%20Slice%20Recipe%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20tried%20a%20couple%20of%20variations%20on%20this%20including%20one%20with%20cheese%20and%20pickled%20onions.%20It%20was%20nice,%20but%20in%20the%20end%20I%20preferred%20just%20the%20steak%20filling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20the%20filling%20has%20been%20made,%20allow%20to%20cool%20and%20refrigerate,%20I%20left%20mine%20overnight.%20It%20needs%20to%20be%20completely%20cold%20and%20jellified%20otherwise%20it%20will%20run%20everywhere.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20180C.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20this%20next%20bit%20fairly%20quickly,%20because%20the%20pastry%20needs%20to%20stay%20cold.%20Cut%20the%20sheet%20of%20pastry%20into%204%20pieces,%20and%20place%20two%20of%20them%20on%20a%20baking%20tray.%20Divide%20the%20steak%20slice%20filling%20between%20the%20sheets%20leaving%20a%202.5cm%20border%20(that%E2%80%99s%20a%20guess)%20around%20the%20outside%20and%20brush%20it%20with%20beaten%20egg.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERoll%20out%20the%20remaining%20sheets%20of%20pastry%20so%20they%E2%80%99re%20slightly%20larger%20than%20the%20bases.%20Put%20them%20on%20top%20of%20the%20steak%20filling%20and%20press%20the%20edges%20together%20with%20a%20fork.%20Score%20the%20top%20if%20you%20like,%20using%20a%20butter%20knife%20(don%E2%80%99t%20cut%20all%20the%20way%20through).%20Brush%20the%20whole%20thing%20with%20beaten%20egg%20and%20cook%20for%2020-25%20mins%20until%20golden.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20yo
