.%20Rice%20gruel%20with%20some%20cherupayar%20thoran%20and%20papaddum%20is%20a%20classic%20combo!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20soaked%20some%20green%20moong%20during%20the%20day%20thinking%20of%20making%20some%20simple%20thoran%20,%20but%20then%20totally%20forgot%20about%20them...later%20that%20night,%20I%20drained%20the%20water%20out%20and%20again%20forgot%20about%20them.%20They%20graciously%20sprouted%20by%20the%20next%20day%20and%20when%20I%20came%20back%20from%20office,%20I%20have%20a%20bowl%20full%20of%20moong%20with%20lovely%20little%20sprouts%20.%20I%20left%20them%20as%20such%20for%20one%20more%20day%20and%20they%20grew%20longer%20sprouts!!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20promptly%20turned%20to%20my%20%20facebook%20friends%20for%20recipe%20suggestions%20(other%20than%20cherupayar%20thoran).%20You%20see,%20I%20wanted%20to%20make%20something%20special%20and%20different.%20So%20comes%20a%20good%20few%20replies%20like%20making%20Chaat,%20Salad,%20Misal%20,%20Usal%20etc%20and%20I%20decided%20to%20go%20with%20the%20Usal%20preparation%20shared%20by%20a%20good%20friend%20who%20shares%20some%20yummy%20Indian%20recipes%20at%20BellaOnline.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUsal%20is%20a%20very%20popular%20Maharashtrian%20dish%20made%20most%20commonly%20with%20Matki%20or%20moth%20beans%20(a%20brown%20colored%20oval%20shaped%20bean).%20But%20you%20can%20prepare%20the%20dish%20with%20green%20moong%20just%20as%20well.%20The%20moong%20is%20cooked%20and%20then%20added%20to%20a%20mild%20masala%20gravy%20-%20the%20dish%20can%20be%20dry%20masala%20or%20a%20gravy%20masala,%20as%20per%20your%20choice.%20Mine%20was%20semi%20gravy!%20I've%20added%20a%20Keralite%20twist%20to%20the%20dish%20by%20adding%20curry%20leaves%20in%20the%20dish.%20It%20does%20add%20a%20lot%20of%20flavor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreparing%20a%20dish%20with%20Sprouts%20requires%20some%20planning%20ahead%20but%20so%20worth%20the%20wait%20and%20double%20the%20nutrition!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20to%20sprout%20moong:%20Soak%201%20cup%20of%20green%20moong%20(or%20any%20lentil%20of%20choice)%20for%20atleast%206-8hrs%20or%20overnight.%20Drain%20the%20water%20completely%20and%20transfer%20the%20moong%20into%20a%20cheese%20cloth/muslin%20cloth%20and%20cover%20them%20and%20let%20them%20sit%20in%20a%20dry%20spot%20for%20another%205-6hrs%20,%20open%20and%20check%20if%20they%20have%20sprouted%20to%20your%20choice,%20else%20just%20shake%20them%20up%20a%20bit%20and%20again%20leave%20it%20for%20few%20more%20hours.%20(I%20actually%20left%20mine%20in%20the%20same%20dish%20as%20it%20was%20soaked%20for%202%20days%20after%20draining%20the%20water%20out%20-%20hence%20got%20longer%20sprouts)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESprouted%20Green%20Moong%20Usal%20Recipe%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERecipe%20source%20:%20Adapted%20from%20Sadhana%20Ghinde's%20recipe%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou'll%20need%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Cook%20the%20sprouts%20in%20a%20pressure%20cooker%20with%203%20cups%20of%20water%20with%20the%20spices%20and%20salt.%20Let%20it%20whistle%20for%20about%203-4%20times.%20(I%20made%20mine%20quite%20well%20cooked,%20almost%20soggy%20,%20so%20I%20did%20about%205-6%20whistles)%5C%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20In%20a%20kadai,%20heat%20the%20oil%20and%20crack%20mustard%20seeds,%20dry%20red%20chillies%20and%20curry%20leaves.%20Then%20add%20the%20ginger%20and%20onions%20and%20saute%20for%20few%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Add%20the%20spices%20-%20turmeric%20powder,%20red%20chilli%20powder,%20garam%20masala,%20chaat%20masala%20and%20salt%20and%20let%20it%20cook%20foo%20few%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Now%20add%20the%20cooked%20sprouts%20and%20combine%20well.%20Finally%20add%20the%20lemon%20juice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E5.%20Garnish%20with%20chopped%20Cilantro,%20grated%20coconut%20and%20diced/sliced%20onions%20before%20serving!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20notes:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3%20cups%20water%20to%20cook%202%20cups%20of%20moong%20dal%20may%20result%20in%20it%20being%20rather%20soggy%20or%20watery%20(I%20wanted%20that%20-%20for%20my%20gravy)%20,%20but%20you%20can%20cook%20in%20a%20little%20lesser%20water%20if%20you%20want%20a%20more%20dry%20version.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20prefer%20to%20flavor%20my%20lentils%20too,%20so%20I've%20spiced%20up%20the%20water%20in%20which%20I%20cook%20it.%20You%20can%20avoid%20that%20if%20you%20prefer.%20I've%20also%20heard%20that%20people%20believe%20that%20lentils%20won't%20cook%20well%20if%20salt%20is%20added%20to%20the%20water%20it%20cooks%20in%20.I%20have%20till%20date%20had%20no%20issues%20with%20my%20lentils%20not%20cooking%20well,%20as%20I%20always%20cook%20them%20like%20that%20to%20add%20some%20flavor%20into%20the%20lentils%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChaat%20masala%20is%20not%20commonly%20added%20to%20Usal%20preparations,%20but%20I%20saw%20some%20recipes%20using%20Amchur%20powder(dry%20mango%20powder),%20so%20chaat%20masala%20was%20the%20closest%20I%20had%20for%20a%20tangy%20spice%20powder%20,%20but%20it%20added%20so%20much%20flavor,%20I%20think%20it%20was%20the%20star%20of%20the%20dish...apart%20from%20my%20sprouts%20of%20course!%20:-)%3C/p%3E%3C
