Influencias de Cocina
As a southern lady, my mother is the greatest influence on my cooking style. Meals prepared from fresh produce from the family garden has inspired me to renew my love for the garden. Working in the turned earth and bringing in the bounty of vegetables and turning them into tasty dishes has become a passion for me. I also "put up" salsas, relishes and frozen vegetables to enjoy throughout the winter. I have lightened up a lot of my mother's recipes and my interests have changed as the foodie world has changed how the world eats. Still, I feel my mother's influence. She enjoyed cooking and she had pride in the creation of her hands. I often feel drawn to the kitchen as a place of meditation. I can always turn to the practice of creating a meal as a way to destress from a day of teaching energetic teens. I find peace in the simple act of meticulously dicing vegetables into perfect cubes. Uniform bites of fresh vegetables mixed with herbs and spices bring joy and nourishment after emerging from the peaceful act of cooking in my kitchen, the oasis I long for after a stressful day in the classroom.
