My Mom was an amazing cook when we were growing up. We always had a garden and we had a small ranch that produced chickens and cows. We would can and freeze anything we could get our hands on. She was always finding someone who had apples that needed to be picked, or pears, we would pick blackberries to freeze or make jam out of . She used what she had to make meals be it a small lunch or dinner for 15 or 16 people who would just "drop in". The only problem was she would make up dishes and never write down how she did it ! She made an amazing sauce one year out of onions, raisins and rubarb that we called "Rubarb No" I don't know why... but it was soo good on pork, beef or chicken ! She cannot remember how she made it !! She doesnt cook so much anymore. On the other hand my Grandmother was a more traditional cook, having been born and raised in the Midwest, Iowa, she would whip up pea salad, pan fried trout and deep fried smelt. Tomatoes were big as was corn. Lots of pork and potatoes. I had great infuences in lots of different ways of cooking, from going thru my "counter culture" faze where everything was organic and fresh, to moving to the city where tv dinners were acceptable. I am still dabbling in various ways of cooking but baking is my true passion.
