I tried to give it 4½ stars for the original recipe with my review, but it didn't take so I'm leaving this comment so I can rate it. It deserves to be tried and people can be reluctant if there are no ratings.

I LOVE this recipe and I was devastated when I lost my recipe cards during a move. I originally found this in a Vegetarian magazine in the 90s, so I thought it was pretty hopeless. I remember it. It's simple, but I wasn't 100% sure on the amount of lentils or ketchup, for example. My whole family loves this hearty stew.

I modified it a bit and everyone seems to think it's an improvement (including me).

I reduced it from 8 cups of water to 6. It makes it much thicker and more flavorful because it isn't so watered down.

I increased the number of garlic cloves from 2 to 4-6, depending on the size of each clove.

I put closer to a ¼ tsp than ⅛ tsp of cloves, but not QUITE ¼.

Lastly I added 3-4 peeled and simply sliced carrots. I sauté the carrots for a few minutes along with the garlic and onions to soften them just a smudge.

It makes an already very good stew and turns it up to a really outstanding one!
