  1. C. warm water for 10 min. Drain well. Cream shortening with the granulated sugar and brown sugar till light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla and orange rind till combined well. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and cinnamon. Blend well. Combine the rolled oats and 4 tbs. warm water. Stir cherries and oats into batter. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto lightly greased baking sheets. Bake in a preheated 350F oven for 12-15 min, or possibly till edges are golden brown.
