  1. Combine dates and 1 Tbsp. flour, add in water, simmer 10 min and add in vanilla. Combine sugar with flour, oats, soda, add in melted shortening. Stir well. Spread half of the mix in 8x12x2 inch pan. Cover with date mix. Spread the rest of the flour mix over dates mix. Pat smooth. Bake in 375 degree oven for 20 min. Cold in pan and cut in squares.
