.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20have%20never%20done%20anything%20with%20pears%20other%20than%20to%20gobble%20them%20up%20out%20of%20hand,%20so%20I%20thought%20I'd%20give%20the%20poaching%20recipe%20a%20whirl.%20The%20Cooking%20Club%20Cookbook%20shows%20off%20the%20once-a-month%20Sunday%20afternoon%20get%20togethers%20that%20the%20authors%20had%20to%20hone%20their%20cooking%20skills.%20They%20picked%20different%20themes%20and%20cuisines%20for%20the%20chapters%20in%20the%20book%20and%20the%20first%20one,%20a%20Spanish%20menu,%20had%20lots%20of%20great%20and%20somewhat%20easy-sounding%20recipes.%20The%20Pears%20Rioja%20called%20for%20a%20flambe%20at%20the%20end,%20however,%20and%20given%20that%20the%20Crispy%20Cook%20has%20curly,%20escapist%20locks%20and%20a%20somewhat%20clumsy%20nature,%20I%20opted%20not%20to%20get%20any%20crispier%20with%20that%20finishing%20technique.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20found%20another%20recipe%20for%20Poached%20Pears%20in%20Red%20Wine%20over%20at%20this%20website,%20but%20it%20called%20for%20a%20scandalous%20amount%20of%20wine%20(2%20whole%20cups!)%20and%20I%20was%20not%20willing%20to%20part%20with%20that%20much%20grapery.%20Taking%20the%20best%20parts%20of%20each%20recipe,%20(in%20my%20humble%20virgin%20pear-cooking%20opinion)%20I%20came%20up%20with%20this%20tasty%20recipe.%20We%20tried%20it%20as%20is%20and%20it's%20good,%20but%20it%20is%20even%20more%20delightful%20as%20a%20topping%20for%20vanilla%20ice%20cream.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECooking%20it%20filled%20the%20kitchen%20with%20an%20imperial%20and%20suitably%20autumnal%20spiciness%20and%20it%20was%20great%20to%20be%20able%20to%20go%20to%20the%20market%20and%20buy%20hard%20fruit%20that%20didn't%20need%20ripening%20before%20cooking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPOACHED%20PEARS%20IN%20RIOJA%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20wine,%20vanilla,%20sugar%20and%20spices%20in%20medium%20saucepan.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil,%20stirring,%20until%20sugar%20is%20dissolved.%20Keep%20an%20eye%20on%20the%20heat%20so%20it%20doesn't%20boil%20over.%20Let%20cook%20until%20desired%20syrupiness%20is%20achieved%20(about%2010-15%20minutes).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESlice%20pears%20into%201/4%20inch%20slices.%20Add%20half%20of%20pear%20slices%20and%20cook%20over%20low%20heat,%20until%20medium-soft,%20about%2010%20minutes.%20Remove%20with%20slotted%20spoon%20and%20add%20in%20remaining%20pears%20to%20cook.%20Add%20in%20first%20batch%20of%20pears%20and%20cool.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECover%20and%20chill%20at%20least%202%20hours%20or%20until%20cold.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMakes%206-8%20dessert%20servings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EToday%20is%20the%20last%20day%20of%20the%20Fresh%20Produce%20of%20the%20Month's%20pear%20edition,%20so%20call%20on%20Marta%20in%20the%20next%20week%20to%20see%20the%20roundup%20of%20fruity%20recipes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20a%20Happy,%20Healthy%20and%20Safe%20Halloween%20to%20all!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
