A Ukrainian favorite. In my opinion they are best just out of the oven.

  1. Completely dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over sugar water and let rise ~ 10 min.
  2. Beat Butter and Crisco with an electric mixer until well blended.
  3. Beat eggs till creamy, slowly adding milk and sour cream
  4. Slowly add egg and milk mixture to butter mixture.
  5. With a wooden spoon, mix flour into mixture until absorbed.
  6. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate overnight.
  7. In a bowl mix together the 1 cup Flour and 1 Cup Sugar– this will be the mixture you roll the balls of dough onto.
  8. Place Egg Wites in a glass bowl and beat until peaks form. Set to the side.
  9. Mix Ground Walnuts and Sugar in a small bowl and set to the side.
  10. Break off tennis ball size amount of dough and flatten into a disc.
  11. Roll out on flour sugar mixture a 9-10 inch circle of dough.
  12. Cut like a pie into 8 triangles, place ½ tsp jam on wide den of triangle. Flap dough over jam and roll to the point. Dip into egg whites then into ground walnuts.
  13. Place on greased baking sheet and curve the ends in to make a crescent shape.
  14. Bake at 350* oven for about 20 minutes (depending on your oven) until golden, on the bottom. Store Rohalyky in an air tight container. These freeze well.
