%20plants%20at%20my%20Grandfather's%20house.%20My%20cousins%20and%20I%20would%20pluck%20them%20straight%20off%20the%20plant%20and%20eat%20them%20raw.%20A%20domestic%20help%20had%20once%20told%20us%20not%20to%20eat%20them%20it%20they%20were%20red%20on%20the%20inside%20as%20that'd%20be%20poisonous%20(not%20true)%20and%20it%20was%20the%20one%20thing%20we%20followed.%20The%20only%20way%20to%20see%20the%20insides%20was%20by%20biting%20into%20them%20(or%20so%20we%20thought!).%20If%20we%20found%20that%20they%20were%20the%20red%20types,%20we'd%20spit%20them%20out,%20%20rinse%20our%20mouth%20a%20few%20times%20and%20fervently%20pray%20to%20God%20for%20longer%20life!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20Thatha's%20%20house%20was/is%20huge%20with%20about%20an%20acre's%20land%20surrounding%20it%20and%20had%20many%20fruit%20trees.%20There%20was%20jamun,%20wood%20apple%20(bel),%20ramphal,%20gooseberries%20(amla),%20otehite/star%20gooseberries%20(nallikayi),%20two%20types%20of%20guavas,%20lime,%20papaya,%20jackfruit%20and%20blackberries.%20The%20only%20fruit%20we%20missed%20back%20then%20was%20a%20mango%20tree.%20One%20of%20the%20kids%20in%20the%20neighborhood%20decided%20to%20rectify%20that%20by%20planting%20a%20mango%20seed%20(of%20the%20mango%20she%20ate!)%20and%20diligently%20watered%20it%20for%20a%20few%20days%20and%20as%20was%20bound%20to%20happen,%20soon%20forgot%20all%20about%20it.%20But%20nature%20took%20over%20and%20now%20there%20is%20a%20fruit%20bearing%20mango%20plant%20too,%20in%20that%20house!%20As%20kids,%20we%20spent%20most%20of%20our%20summer%20vacation%20days%20out%20in%20the%20garden%20there,%20climbed%20pretty%20much%20all%20those%20trees%20and%20had%20a%20few%20falls%20(I%20still%20have%20bruises%20to%20show%20for%20them!).%20We'd%20eat%20almost%20everything%20that%20grew,%20including%20nutty%20seeds%20from%20the%20cotton%20tree,%20leaves%20of%20the%20tamarind%20tree,%20leaves%20of%20a%20wild%20plant%20(more%20a%20weed,%20I%20think)%20that%20were%20sour,%20the%20thin%20flesh%20off%20this%20fruit%20called%20%22surgikayi%22%20(I%20could%20not%20find%20the%20English%20equivalent),%20the%20red%20berries%20from%20the%20curry%20leaves%20tree%20(it%20was%20big%20tree%20that%20was%20over%2050%20years%20old)%20and%20once%20when%20someone%20told%20us%20neem%20was%20beneficial,%20we%20attempted%20to%20eat%20neem%20leaves%20as%20well!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EComing%20back%20to%20tendli,%20it%20is%20quite%20popular%20in%20Konkani%20cuisine%20and%20is%20often%20seen%20as%20an%20upkari%20(dry%20bhaji),%20sometimes%20with%20cashews.%20The%20recipe%20today%20has%20tendli%20in%20a%20delicious%20coconut%20gravy,%20that%20goes%20well%20with%20plain%20rice%20and%20rotis.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDry%20roast%20all%20the%20masala%20ingredients,%20except%20tamarind.%20Grind%20to%20a%20smooth%20paste%20along%20with%20the%20tamarind,%20adding%20little%20water.%20Keep%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20oil%20in%20a%20pan%20(I%20use%20a%20pressure%20pan%20for%20quicker%20cooking).%20Add%20mustard%20seeds%20and%20heeng%20and%20let%20it%20pop.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20chopped%20onion%20and%20fry%20until%20lightly%20golden.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20ivy%20gourd%20pieces,%20salt%20and%20jaggery.%20Mix%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20using%20a%20regular%20pan,%20add%201/2%20cup%20of%20water%20and%20cover.%20Cook%20on%20low%20until%20softened.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20using%20pressure%20cooker/pressure%20pan,%20add%202%20tablespoons%20of%20water%20and%20cook%20for%20one%20whistle.%20Wait%20for%20the%20pressure%20to%20release.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdd%20the%20ground%20masala%20and%20bring%20to%20a%20boil.%20Let%20cook%20until%20slightly%20dry.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECheck%20to%20see%20the%20balance%20of%20flavors,%20adding%20salt%20or%20jaggery%20as%20needed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20with%20plain%20rice%20or%20as%20a%20side%20with%20rice%20and%20dal%20or%20rotis.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEating%20Better:%20%20After%20a%20not-so-great%20weekend%20food%20choices%20wise,%20Monday%20and%20Tuesday%20this%20week%20have%20been%20pretty%20good.%20Monday%20saw%20cereal%20with%20milk%20for%20breakfast.%20We%20discovered%20a%20lovely%20Greek%20place%20in%20our%20new%20town,%20where%20I%20had%20a%20chicken%20gyro%20on%20pita,%20loaded%20with%20veggies%20and%20tabbouleh%20salad%20and%20a%20yogurt-cucumber%20sauce.%20Made%20for%20a%20satisfying%20lunch.%20Egg%20burji%20for%20dinner,%20with%20a%20lot%20of%20fruits%20throughout%20the%20day%20(watermelon,%20peaches,%20plums,%20bananas).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EToday%20was%20kanda%20poha/avalakki%20oggarane%20in%20the%20AM%20and%20a%20vegetable%20heavy%20khichdi%20for%20lunch%20(supposedly%20made%20by%20M%20with%20help%20from%20me!)%20with%20a%20spicy%20kadhi,%20which%20will%20most%20likely%20be%20featured%20in%20our%20dinner%20as%20well,%20since%20I%20have%20a%20lot%20leftover.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20a%20different%20note,%20have%20you%20entered%20the%20giveaway%20yet?%20There's%20still%20time!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
