%20and%20those%20warm%20dinner%20rolls%20(again,%20more%20than%20I%20do),%20but%20that%E2%80%99s%20about%20it.%20%20There%20are%20weeks%20I%20buy%20or%20bake%20bread%20where%20it%20more%20or%20less%20sits%20there%20in%20its%20designated%20spot%20on%20top%20of%20the%20microwave,%20just%20getting%20stale.%20%20This%20is%20further%20compounded%20by%20the%20fact%20that%20Beloved%20prefers%20whole%20grain%20bread%20and%20The%20Young%20One%20will%20only%20eat%20white%20sandwich%20bread%20or%20cheese%20bread%20when%20I%20bake%20it%20%E2%80%93%20I%20often%20have%20two%20loaves%20of%20bread%20just%E2%80%A6sitting%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20bread%20exception%20%E2%80%93%20for%20me,%20anyway%20%E2%80%93%20is%20bread%20pudding.%20%20I%20LOVE%20the%20stuff.%20%20If%20it%20is%20on%20the%20menu%20at%20a%20restaurant,%20Beloved%20knows%20we%20will%20be%20ordering%20dessert;%20in%20fact,%20he%E2%80%99s%20been%20known%20to%20tell%20the%20waiter,%20%E2%80%9CDon%E2%80%99t%20bother%20asking%20%E2%80%93%20just%20bring%20the%20bread%20pudding.%E2%80%9D%20%20For%20me,%20it%20is%20one%20of%20the%20ultimate%20comfort%20foods%20(Pho%20Bo%20and%20Sticky%20Rice%20with%20Mangoes%20is%20also%20on%20that%20list%E2%80%A6I%20know,%20but%20I%20never%20claimed%20to%20be%20normal,%20now%20did%20I?).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyhoo,%20this%20weekend%20I%20found%20myself%20with%20half%20a%20loaf%20of%20white%20sandwich%20bread%20that%20was%20fit%20for%20nothing%20but%20toast,%20and%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20going%20to%20be%20good%20for%20that%20much%20longer%20either.%20%20I%20certainly%20didn%E2%80%99t%20want%20to%20throw%20it%20away,%20so%20I%20stood%20there,%20pondering%20it,%20while%20I%20fried%20bacon%20for%20our%20Sunday%20brunch,%20when%20it%20occurred%20to%20me%20%E2%80%93%20French%20toast!%20%20But%20there%20was%20only%20the%20two%20of%20us,%20since%20Beloved%20is%20in%20California%20on%20business,%20so%20that%20would%20only%20use%20three%20pieces%20of%20bread.%20%20Where%20did%20that%20leave%20me?%20%20With%20a%20lot%20more%20stale%20bread,%20that%E2%80%99s%20where.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAh-hah!%20I%20thought.%20%20Bread%20pudding!%20And%20not%20just%20any%20bread%20pudding%20%E2%80%93%20a%20chocolate%20bread%20pudding!%20%20But%20all%20of%20the%20chocolate%20bread%20pudding%20recipes%20instructed%20melting%20the%20chocolate%20and%20adding%20it%20to%20the%20eggs%20and%20milk,%20and%20I%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20sure%20I%20wanted%20that.%20%20So%20I%20ended%20up%20substituting%20chocolate%20chips%20for%20the%20raisins%20in%20a%20more%20traditional%20bread%20pudding%20recipe.%20%20I%20also%20skipped%20the%20sauce,%20which%20is%20made%20of%20butter,%20sugar,%20eggs%20and%20usually%20some%20sort%20of%20booze%20%E2%80%93%20I%20wanted%20The%20Young%20One%20to%20be%20able%20to%20have%20some,%20and%20it%20was%20quite%20rich%20enough%20without%20the%20sauce%20anyway.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20plated%20the%20pudding%20and%20took%20the%20picture%20of%20it%20about%2010%20minutes%20after%20it%20came%20out%20of%20the%20oven,%20and%20it%20was%20very%20tasty%20hot,%20but%20not%20so%20pretty%20and%20the%20cinnamon%20seemed%20a%20tad%20overwhelming.%20%20However,%20I%20ate%20some%20for%20breakfast%20this%20morning,%20after%20heating%20it%20for%20about%2030%20seconds%20in%20the%20microwave,%20and%20I%20have%20to%20tell%20you%20I%20preferred%20it%20this%20morning.%20%20So%20let%20the%20pudding%20rest%20for%20at%20least%20an%20hour%20before%20you%20serve%20it,%20to%20allow%20it%20to%20set%20up%20and%20the%20flavors%20to%20meld.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlso,%20most%20bread%20pudding%20recipes%20are%20going%20to%20call%20for%20French%20or%20Italian%20loaves,%20or%20a%20sweeter%20bread%20such%20as%20Challa.%20%20Sandwich%20bread%20will%20be%20just%20fine%20for%20this%20recipe%20if%20you%20further%20dry%20it%20out%20in%20the%20oven%20a%20little%20before%20soaking%20it%20in%20the%20milk.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChocolate%20Chip%20Bread%20Pudding%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eserves%20six,%20or%20me%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20350%C2%B0%20F.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20the%20cubed%20bread%20in%20a%20large%20mixing%20bowl;%20pour%20the%20milk%20over%20it,%20allowing%20it%20to%20soak%20for%20about%2015%20%E2%80%93%2020%20minutes.%20%20Push%20the%20bread%20down%20into%20the%20milk%20with%20a%20spoon%20occasionally.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20the%20bread%20is%20soaking,%20use%20the%20tablespoon%20of%20butter%20to%20grease%20a%201%201/2%20quart%20baking%20dish.%20%20I%20used%20my%20souffl%C3%A9%20dish,%20but%20a%209%E2%80%B3%20x%209%E2%80%B3%20square%20baking%20dish%20should%20work%20well,%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20bowl%20of%20a%20stand%20mixer,%20combine%20the%20eggs,%20sugar,%20vanilla%20and%20spices%20and%20beat%20with%20the%20whisk%20attachment%20until%20frothy,%20about%202%20minutes.%20%20(This%20can%20be%20done%20by%20hand%20if%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20a%20stand%20mixer;%20it%20will%20just%20take%20longer.)%20%20Gently%20stir%20the%20egg/sugar%20mixture%20into%20the%20bread%20and%20milk%20until%20thoroughly%20combined,%20then%20gently%20fold%20in%20the%20chocolate%20chips.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20bread%20mixture%20into%20the%20buttered%20dish%20and%20bake%20for%2035%20%E2%80%93%2045%20minutes,%20or%20until%20set.%20%20The%20pudding%20is%20done%20when%20the%20edges%20start%20getting%20a%20bit%20brown%20and%20pull%20away%20from%20the%20edge%20of%20the%20pan.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20can%20serve%20the%20pudding%20right%20away,%20but%20it%20is%20best%20if%20allowed%20to%20rest%20for%20at%20least%20an%20hour.%20%20If%20it%20cools%20off%20too%20much,%20you%20can%20reheat%20it%20gently%20in%20the%20oven%20for%20a%20few%20moments.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
