What is there not to love about a restaurant called Goodfellas that has a continuous loop of its namesake movie on various screens throughout the bar and dining room? Regardless of the punctuation in that last line, that is certainly not a question. Because, in fact, there is much to love about Goodfellas, a dependable Italian favorite located on State Street in New Haven.
At Goodfellas you will find beloved traditional Italian dishes thoughtfully elevated with locally sourced ingredients. For instance, there's the amazing starter, Fiore di Latte, which takes prosciutto and handmade mozzarella to new levels by wrapping it in escarole and drizzling it with aged balsamic. %20offered%20for%20the%20wallet-friendly%20price%20of%20$32.%20And%20there%20were%20ample%20choices,%20as%20compared%20to%20other,%20more%20limited%20Restaurant%20Week%20menus%20found%20in%20the%20Elm%20City.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20(Amy)%20dined%20at%20Goodfellas%20solo%20last%20week,%20before%20heading%20to%20my%205:30%20Artisan%20Breads%20class%20at%20Gateway%20Community%20College.%20I%20was%20thrilled%20that%20they%20were%20open,%20as%20New%20Haven%20restaurants%20tend%20to%20close%20between%20lunch%20and%20dinner,%20making%20it%20difficult%20to%20find%20a%20decent%20meal%20before%20class.%20I%20sat%20alone%20at%20the%20bar%20around%203:45,%20and%20by%20the%20time%205:00%20rolled%20around,%20the%20bar%20and%20most%20of%20the%20tables%20in%20sight%20were%20filled.%20The%20bartender,%20Bobby,%20worked%20alone,%20but%20he%20handled%20the%20business%20without%20leaving%20a%20lone%20diner%20like%20myself%20feeling%20ignored%20or%20unimportant.%20While%20I%20sipped%20my%20Chianti,%20I%20watched%20the%20muted%20screen,%20supplying%20the%20curse-laced%20dialogue%20of%20the%20movie%20in%20my%20own%20head.%20(As%20Goodfellas%20is%20in%20my%20top%20five%20movies%20of%20all%20time,%20I%20know%20every%20line.%20%22Now%20go%20home%20and%20get%20your%20%23!@$'in%20shinebox!%22)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20dinner,%20I%20decided%20to%20do%20my%20own%20play%20on%20surf%20and%20turf%20and%20ordered%20the%20Oysters%20Rockefeller%20and%20%22Chef%20Gennaro's%20signature%20dish%22%20the%20Filet%20Cognac.%20I%20was%20served%20three%20sea-salty%20oysters%20swimming%20in%20a%20vaguely%20sweet%20herby%20Pernod-laced%20bechamel%20sauce%20topped%20with%20bitter%20spinach,%20sharp%20cheese%20and%20crunchy%20breadcrumbs.%20They%20were%20beautiful%20and%20I%20was%20transported%20to%20my%20first%20Oysters%20Rockefeller,%20from%20Antoine's%20in%20New%20Orleans,%20where%20they%20were%20invented.%20The%20Filet%20was%20composed%20of%20two%20perfectly%20peppered%20medallions%20that%20were%20sooooo%20tender,%20I%20had%20one%20of%20those%20%22Aha!%22%20moments%20about%20how%20filets%20are%20tenderloins.%20Duh.%20There%20was%20enough%20lobster%20meat%20topping%20the%20steak%20to%20make%20me%20feel%20like%20I%20was%20getting%20a%20bargain.%20The%20side%20dish,%20silky%20mashed%20potatoes,%20were%20seasoned%20only%20to%20enhance%20the%20potato%20flavor%20itself,%20and%20the%20entire%20dish%20was%20finished%20in%20a%20velvety%20Cognac%20cream%20sauce%20that%20made%20me%20wish%20I%20had%20a%20spoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20yet,%20there%20was%20still%20dessert%20to%20come.%20Bread%20class%20was%20beckoning,%20so%20I%20asked%20barkeep%20Billy%20what%20he%20would%20choose.%20Without%20hesitation%20he%20said,%20%22The%20cupcake,%22%20and%20I%20said,%20%22Sold!%22%20I%20requested%20it%20to-go%20and%20enjoyed%20it%20later%20that%20night%20after%20class.%20The%20moist%20chocolate%20cake%20was%20layered%20with%20cannoli%20cream%20and%20covered%20with%20a%20sheen%20of%20dark%20chocolate%20glaze.%20Luscious.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20for%20$32?!?!%20What%20a%20meal.%20Oh,%20New%20Haven,%20please%20bring%20back%20Restaurant%20Week%20soon.%20Until%20then,%20I%20will%20be%20content%20to%20dine%20at%20Goodfellas%20no%20matter%20the%20price.%20(%22For%20us%20to%20live%20any%20other%20way%20was%20nuts.%22)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGoodfellas%20Restaurant%20is%20located%20at%20702%20State%20Street%20in%20New%20Haven,%20CT%20and%20further%20information,%20including%20hours,%20menus,%20events,%20and%20more%20can%20be%20found%20on%20their%20website.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
