%20%20I%20think%20that%20is%20why%20it%20took%20me%20so%20long%20to%20start%20the%20book.%20%20But,%20as%20soon%20as%20I%20started%20it,%20%20I%20could%20not%20put%20it%20down.%20%20%20As%20I%20read,%20%20I%20had%20flashes%20of%20To%20Kill%20a%20Mockingbird,%20%20In%20the%20Garden%20of%20Good%20and%20Evil,%20%20and%20even%20some%20vague%20reminders%20of%20Flannery%20O%E2%80%99Connor.%20%20%20%20Put%20this%20all%20together%20with%20a%20botanical%20twist%20and%20you%20have%20Garden%20Spells.%20%20%20I%20was%20certainly%20under%20a%20%20spell%20myself%20and%20in%20no%20time%20at%20all,%20my%20creative%20spirit%20kicked%20in%20and%20I%20started%20thinking%20about%20all%20sorts%20of%20sweet%20and%20savory%20dishes%20I%20could%20make%20from%20the%20herbs%20and%20flowers%20growing%20in%20my%20own%20garden.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20lavender%20so%20I%20knew%20I%20could%20do%20something%20there.%20%20I%20have%20posted%20about%20lavender%20sugar,%20%20lavender%20herbed%20salt,%20%20and%20lavender%20sugar%20cookies%20in%20the%20past.%20%20%20Lavender,%20according%20to%20%20%E2%80%9CFrom%20the%20Waverley%20Kitchen%20Journal%E2%80%9D%20%20in%20the%20back%20of%20the%20book,%20%20%E2%80%9CRaises%20spirits.%20%20Prevents%20bad%20decisions%20resulting%20from%20fatigue%20or%20depression.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20sorely%20need%20to%20revisit%20lavender,%20I%20thought.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20rosemary%20as%20well%20and%20have%20that%20monster%20rosemary%20bush%20in%20the%20herb%20garden.%20%20And,%20as%20I%20searched%20my%20site,%20I%20found%20LOTS%20of%20dishes%20that%20incorporate%20this%20herb.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20then%20I%20read%20about%20Claire%E2%80%99s%20rare%20rose%20geranium%20wine%20with%20all%20of%20its%20mystical%20powers%20of%20remembrance.%20%20Since%20I%20have%20been%20on%20a%20nostalgic%20kick%20lately%20(and%20since%20I%20had%20some%20rose%20geranium%20sugar%20that%20I%20had%20been%20meaning%20to%20experiment%20with),%20%20rose%20geranium%20was%20going%20to%20be%20my%20herb%20of%20choice%20for%20this%20post.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20quote%20%E2%80%9CFrom%20the%20Waverley%20Kitchen%20Journal,%E2%80%9D%20again:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERose%20Geranium%E2%80%94Produces%20memories%20of%20past%20good%20times.%20%20Opposite%20of%20Hyacinth%20Bulb.%20%20A%20time-travel%20flower.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20adapted%20this%20recipe%20from%20my%20lavender%20sugar%20cookie%20recipe%20(which%20I%20adapted%20from%20the%20Gourmet%20Cookbook.)%20%20So%20setting%20out%20with%20my%20home-made%20Rose%20Geranium%20Sugar,%20%20I%20made%20up%20a%20batch%20of%20magical,%20%20mystery%20cookies.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERose%20Geranium%20%20Sugar%20Cookies%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInspired%20by%20Garden%20Spells%20by%20Sarah%20Addison%20Allen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20375%20degrees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhisk%20together%20geranium,%20granulated%20and%20powdered%20sugars%20in%20a%20medium%20mixing%20bowl.%20%20Add%20salt,%20soda,%20and%20cream%20of%20tartar.%20%20Whisk%20together.%20%20Place%20in%20the%20bowl%20of%20%20a%20stand%20mixer%20equipped%20with%20the%20paddle%20attachment.%20%20While%20mixer%20is%20running,%20%20add%20oil,%20%20eggs,%20%20%20and%20vanilla%20and%20mix%20until%20combined.%20%20Slowly%20add%20flour%20until%20a%20stiff%20dough%20forms.%20%20(Make%20sure%20you%20scrape%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20mixing%20bowl%20periodically.)%20%20The%20dough%20is%20fairly%20crumbly%20and%20resembles%20a%20short%20bread%20dough.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20dough%20will%20be%20crumbly%20before%20you%20form%20it%20into%20balls.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELine%20cookie%20sheets%20with%20parchment%20paper.%20%20Using%20a%20small%20ice%20cream%20scoop,%20place%20balls%20of%20dough%20about%202%20inches%20apart%20on%20cookie%20sheet.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20balls%20are%20a%20bit%20bigger%20than%20a%20quarter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBake%20for%208-10%20minutes.%20%20Remove%20to%20cooling%20racks%20and%20sprinkle%20with%20powdered%20sugar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGarnished%20with%20a%20bit%20of%20Rose%20Geranium%20leaves.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYield:%20%20About%205%20dozen%20cookies.%20%20This%20recipe%20can%20be%20easily%20cut%20in%20half%20for%20a%20smaller%20batch.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20like%20Claire%20used%20her%20powers%20of%20%C3%BCber%20perception%20to%20notice%20every%20nuance%20of%20her%20garden%20(like%20the%20encroaching%20ivy%20alerting%20her%20that%20someone%20was%20about%20to%20creep%20into%20her%20own%20life),%20I%20wonder%20what%20we%20all%20could%20learn%20IF%20we%20took%20the%20time%20to%20notice%20messages%20from%20our%20own%20garden?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlthough%20I%20wanted%20to%20take%20my%20pillow%20out%20in%20the%20garden%20and%20sleep%20like%20Claire%20often%20does%20in%20the%20novel,%20I%20did%20not%20(it%20was%20too%20hot!).%20%20But%20I%20would%20love%20to%20get%20my%20hands%20on%20a%20Waverley%20apple.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20thoroughly%20enjoyed%20this%20book%20and%20would%20recommend%20it%20to%20anyone.%20%20(Did%20I%20hear%20that%20they%20were%20making%20a%20movie?)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd,%20even%20though%20there%20
