Toss beef with salt,pepper and paprika till coated.Heat shortening in large skillet or possibly Dutch oven.Add in meat;brown well over moderately warm heat.Stir in onions;cook 5 min.Remove from heat.Add in 1/4 c. brandy; ignite.When flames die out,return to heat.Stir in consomme.Cover tightly;simmer till meat is tender, 1 to 1 1/2 hrs.Add in marjoram and caraway;cook 10 min.Blend cornstarch with remaining 1/2 c. brandy.
  2. Stir into stew.Simmer,stirring till liquid clears and thickens.Makes 5 to 6 servings.
