  1. Combine oatmeal, whole-wheat flour, salt, shortening, molasses and honey.
  2. Pour boiling water over all. Mix and let cold.
  3. While cooling, dissolve yeast in hot water with the honey. Add in egg to cooled batter, then fold in dissolved yeast.
  4. Add in flour till dough is just soft sufficient to knead. Knead lightly. Place dough in a greased bowl; cover with a damp cloth. Let rise in hot place till doubled in bulk; about one hour.
  5. Punch down dough and cut into 12 equal pcs. Shape each piece into a ball in put into a greased 9-inch pan. Let rise again for 45 min.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F. for 40 min.
  7. NOTES:* Holiday rolls with oatmeal and molasses -
  8. This recipe has long beenpart of my Thanksgiving tradition. I have long since forgotten its source.
  9. * These rolls are really wonderful, but they need time to rise. start them as early in the day as possible. Do not even think about using the quick-rise yeasts.
  10. Difficulty: easy to moderate.
  11. Time: several hrs preparation, 1 hour baking and cooling.
  12. Precision: measure the ingredients.
